The Long-Term Effects of Home Visiting on Mothers, Families and Children

The long awaited Mother and Infant Home Visiting Program Evaluation (MIHOPE) report released last week finds significant long-term positive effects of home visiting on maternal, child and family wellbeing outcomes 5-7 years following enrollment in services. This national, randomized study followed thousands of women and children from pregnancy through childhood to measure the effects of home visiting shows significant outcomes by the time children reach Kindergarten, including:

  • Strengthened parent-child interactions

  • Better maternal mental and behavioral health

  • Improved child social-emotional functioning

  • Reduced family conflict and violence

  • Improvements in families’ economic circumstances

Overall, this study further adds to the extensive research demonstrating the value of home visiting. And, further illustrates what home visitors, families and communities know—supporting and strengthening families from the start lays the foundation for lifelong health and well-being!
